Following A Dream To Become an Entrepreneur
The American Dream, becoming a business owner and “becoming your own boss”. Right? It’s everywhere you look and it has become a sought after goal. However, the steps that are required in order to get to that point of being an entrepreneur can be intimidating. That’s why I created this blog. It’s easy to lose sight of your goals without direction. So let’s go over how I got here, and where I plan to go next. But first, let me answer some questions that I have been asked:
1. You’re a firefighter, how did you get into graphic design?
This question is very interesting, and can actually lead to a long story. But I promise I’ll keep it relatively short.
Growing up, I have always loved designing things. I had a website that I made when I was 10 years old on homestead.com. “The Coolest Cars by Alex” — It was very simple, a website about cars and I loved it. It was mine, and I did it by myself. That website would spark a passion for designing websites and learning more about design.
I would move on to designing app icons and themes for an iPhone community on reddit. It is a lot of fun to take something and redesign it to make it your own, and it grew into a desire to become a graphic designer. As I learned the art of graphic design, I would move on to make logos and flyers for people I knew, and sometimes get paid for it. I always received great feedback on my eye for design, even though I look back on some of those things today and think, “What in the world is that?”. See below:
- Circa 2014 Alex, you didn’t even merge your shapes?!
- THOSE GRADIENTS DON’T EVEN MAKE SENSE.
- Those ratios literally make me want to puke.
That was 7 years ago, and today I have had the pleasure of working with multiple business clients, designing websites and logos and loving it.
2. Why not just keep making designs without being a business? Why become an LLC?
There is a standard answer to this question, and it’s that becoming an LLC limits liability for individuals when they are doing work for businesses in order to protect them should anything arise that would compromise my assets. Also, it’s good for taxes. With that being said, that’s not really why I decided to do it.
